(Metal and plexiglass installation)

The bombarding of Rotterdam, also known as the Rotterdam Blitz happened on the morning
of 19th May 1940. Around 2,6 square kilometers of the city were almost leveled. Because of the big
damage from the bombardment and resulting fire, the decision was taken to demolish the entire city center. The city’s destruction was a perfect opportunity to redesign the city.

This project focuses on the destruction of the city and rebuilding. Witte Huis, Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk, and Stadshuis Rotterdam are exceptions that survived the city center bombing in 1940. The three metal constructions represent these buildings. To show my idea I created a prototype of the building Witte Huis on a smaller scale. The real height would be approximately around 2 meters.

The construction‘s metal part mirrors its present structure, while the green plexiglass showcases what has remained unchanged over time and the orange plexiglass represents what has been destroyed and lost. Together, they reflect upon the past, present, and future. Through the relocation of the plexiglass, viewers can also become a part of the future change and witness the transformation in appearance and color. Rotterdam is a city that is constantly evolving, and this installation serves as a visual representation of its industrial
past and vibrant future.
