2024, Horror Vacui - in progress
(Ceramics tiles)

“Horror Vacui“ is an ongoing graduation project.

Memory and sensory experiences shape our identities and perceptions in profound ways.

From childhood, I have navigated through life with the burden of memory deficiencies and later on also hearing.  I reflect on my fear of empty spaces and invite the viewer to join me.

“Horror Vacui“ is a term in Latin that means “fear of empty space”. This term can be seen in visual art across centuries. I am rather interested in the experience that the fear of emptiness brings to us. By reflecting on my fears of not remembering and being overwhelmed by the noises that I hear due to tinnitus I became able to translate these emotions on tiles that are inspired by old damaged fresco paintings.

I experimented with many unusual techniques on clay such as screen printing, Dremel tool, or engravings with a laser cutter. I created a collage from the analog photos I took over the past few years. By using multiple different techniques I was able to create a chaotic visual experience. In the tiles, you can spot some of my memories that are slowly disappearing and being replaced with new ones.

This installation will be accompanied by a sound that will represent the constant noise I hear to achieve a very overwhelming experience.
